Because of recent changes in the tax code as part of the “fiscal cliff” legislation, the IRS will be issuing tax forms based on the revised laws. The IRS has not yet announced when taxpayers can start filing 2012 returns.

The three public libraries in Union County — The Public Library for Union County in Lewisburg, the Herr Memorial Library in Mifflinburg, and the West End Library in Laurelton — will have basic tax forms and publications as soon as they receive them from the government. Other forms are available to download from official federal, state and local websites.

Library staff cannot offer tax preparation assistance.  Contact information for tax agencies is listed below.

During the tax season, area libraries have tax forms for your convenience.  Throughout the year, the libraries have reproducible tax forms available to copy, and they offer public computers that may be used to download and print tax forms from the appropriate website listed below.  Each library charges a small fee for copies and for computer printouts.

* Tax returns must be mailed by midnight on Monday, April 15, 2013.

LOCAL TAX HELP

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers free tax preparation.  Union-Snyder Community Action Agency and AmeriCorps have partnered with the IRS to help low to moderate income individuals file their taxes.   The program is limited to those filing non-itemized returns.

Appointments will be available in Selinsgrove and Lewisburg.   For more information and to schedule an appointment call 570-374-0181.

I-Can! E-File is a free online program you can use to prepare and file your Federal and Pennsylvania taxes.  Just answer simple questions on each screen.  The program will automatically check to see if you are eligible for an Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits.  Then it creates a completed tax return that you can file electronically or print and mail.
