Location: Mifflinburg Library: Herr
Each September, the staff at Herr Memorial Library reminds all parents -- and especially parents of kindergartners -- that a library card can be the most important school supply. A library card not only is a valuable tool for school, opening up a world of opportunity in the form of free reliable resources, but also is a self-esteem booster for a child who is just beginning to navigate the school system.
A Union County Library System card is free for residents of Union County and may be used at any of the three libraries in the Union County Library System. Herr Memorial Library, 500 Market Street in Mifflinburg, offers something for every member of the family, from books on shelves, books on tape and CD, videos, DVDs, the Internet and special programs.
To promote the benefits of owning a library card, all kindergarten-aged children whose parents complete a simple library card application from Herr Memorial Library now through Wed., Oct. 6, will receive a gift and will be entered in a prize drawing.
For more information call program coordinator Carol High or library director Kelly Walter at 966-0831. Herr Memorial Library is open Monday through Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed on Mon., Sept. 6, for Labor Day. Location: Mifflinburg Library: Herr
What is left on your hands after you wash them? Sheila Packer, Community Health Education Instructor for Evangelical Hospital, will present “Germ City” -- a fun “hands-on” program to learn about washing up -- at 7:15 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 9, at Herr Memorial Library.
The name comes from the concept that there is an unseen "Germ City" on most people's hands, and the focal point is a large, walk-through tent tunnel equipped with black lights. Young people and adults apply a black-light sensitive "GlitterBug Potion Lotion" and enter the tunnel to see pretend germs on their hands. Participants then wash their hands normally, re-visit Germ City, and find out whether they have gotten rid of the "bugs." It is literally a “hands-on” experience.
Register to visit "Germ City" by calling 966-0831 or by visiting the library at 500 Market Street in Mifflinburg.
The program is presented as part of the Union County Library System's "Libraries for Health" project, which has been (partially) funded with federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds administered by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. | 10 | 11Musical and cultural tour of Hangzhou, China, to be shownSeptember 11, 2010 - 3 p.m.Musical and cultural tour of Hangzhou, China, to be shown
Location: The Public Library for Union County Library: Lewisburg
A free one-hour visual tour of Hangzhou, the capitol of the Zhejiang Province in China, accompanied by music played on traditional Chinese instruments, will be presented by Chia-Ching Chang at The Public Library for Union County on Sat., Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. The DVD is from Naxos’ "Chinese Musical Journeys" collection and covers sites important in the development of the Middle Kingdom in Chinese history.
The movie features views of the famous West Lake and its bordering pavilions and temples, along with other important sites. A J.S. Bach minuet, transcribed for the Chinese dulcimer, the yangqin, is used to accompany a visit to a silk museum. Other instruments heard in compositions by Feng-zhi Jiang, Jie-liang Lin, Tian-hua Liu, and in traditional Chinese songs include the dizi, the Chinese bamboo transverse flute, and ensembles of wind and strings, known as "silk and bamboo" from their silk strings and bamboo pipes.
This program is appropriate for all ages and is recommended for homeschoolers. Register to attend by calling 523-1172 or by visiting the library at 255 Reitz Blvd. in Lewisburg. |

should include the names of all those who worked on the piece.
This year's event will begin at 10 a.m., with silent bidding
continuing throughout the day until 3:30 p.m. At that time, bid
sheets will be collected and the winning bids determined. Bidders may
